Born of the M class moon of the gas giant Kappalar Prime, Captain Thrain earned his place at the Starfleet Academy when a spot opened for him during the middle of the academic year. Because he concentrated more on his relationship with a female classmate than his studies, Thrain only received average marks at the academy. Despite this he proved to be a outstanding officer after he graduated when assigned to his first posting on the USS Melbourne in 2149. Little more than 10 years later, he was a starship captain.
Captain Thrain and his ship, the USS Jesse James, is attached to Starfleet’s 9th Fleet. Despite the somewhat ’ordinary’ designation of this fleet to outsiders, the 9th Fleet is considered to be one of the Federation’s best. During the General War and Pacification Conflicts the 9th Fleet was observed to have one of the highest kill to loss ratio of any other fleet within Starfleet. Many of it’s crews can be considered ’ace’ having partipated in the destruction or capture of 5 or more enemy vessels.
Although most other Federation fleets are dedicated to peaceful research and exploration, the 9th Fleet has been employed for a more shadowy purpose. Romulan intelligence indicates that Captain Thrain and his crew are currently undergoing training that will allow them to be used in Special Operations exercises and campaigns. The Jesse James is also believed to be being extensively refitted as this takes place. Several other 9th Fleet vessels and units are also receiving the same modifications and their crews being given the same training.
